Post-Essen Spiel 2011

Essen 2011 is completed and, as every year, it was a magical time full of games, meetings, signing sessions, passionate discussions, laughter and tired eyes. The web is full of detailed reports, so I only talk about my fair in this article, very selfishly :p

Awards & Cocktails

7 Wonders oblige, I attended several social events this year, starting with the ceremony of the DSP, on Wednesday night with my buddies from Repos Production and several personalities of the gaming world (to receive a prize in a room where are sited Knizia, Kramer and Teuber among others, that’s great !). Ceremony of the IGA also, on the BoardGameGeek booth, along with Martin Wallace and a « chic » evening with the jury and the nominees of the SdJ. Our media also has its buffets, speeches and champagne (not that much for the champagne, unfortunately …)

Releases

Dr. Shark was available on the Hurricane’s booth. Finally some would say! What a pleasure to finally have a box in the hands after all :) Takenoko (Bombix / Matagot) was not available for sale but you could get to know the panda, especially on a beautiful oversized version! Black Secret, the second and final expansion of Ghost Stories was available from Repos Production. We have had the pleasure, with Piero, to sign many copies over the four days:) Always near the sombreros-wearing belgians, players could get a new plateau for 7 Wonders, the island of Catan, whose entire profits will be donated to a charity chosen by K.Teuber. According to my sources, nearly 8,000 of these boards were sold during the fair !

My favorite game of the fair is undoubtedly Mogel Motte, the latest addition to the small collection of Drei Magier Spiele just take its place along side of the Kakerlaken serie. Same format, same artist but different designers : two children (yes, really): Emely & Lucas Brand gave us an excellent party game where you have to cheat to win! I even managed to create a « buzz » around this game. If you have miss this one, just go for it now ! I also appreciated Dungeon Fighter (Cranio edition).

Brought back n my suitcase: Mogel Motte (x2), Santiago de CubaLupin the ThirdDungeon FighterGulliPiratenRes Publica, Friday, The Idol ProjectTicket to Ride Asia, F3, Corner, and a japanese version, superb, hand made (and a little illegal anyway …) of Hanabi. Oh, I also brought back the umbrella of Ludovic Maublanc and kits for my NERF guns…
